Determined to make his fortune, he commenced quarrying in the Purbeck Hills, creating the 'Tilly Whim' mine. However, he was imprisoned for alleged criminal activities and fled to Newfoundland . His religious faith sustained him throughout his life, being one of those who initiated the construction of the Dissenting Congregational Chapel in Ringwood (still in use today) and a timber church in Bonavista, Newfoundland. This book provides a fascinating insight into life in eighteenth century England and Newfoundland through the eyes of a man who worked, travelled and gained riches of both material and spiritual value.
